Religious School

School ages from Pre-K to Confirmation
Religious Education Pre-Kindergarten thru Post B’nai Mitzvah Confirmation Class
Congregation Shaarey Tefilla’s Religious School educates, empowers, and encourages students to engage in our organization’s community and the Jewish community in preparation for their Jewish adult life. Having smaller size classes allows us to give our students more attention in a warm and welcoming environment.
All students attend Sunday School. Hebrew and Shabbat Prayer classes start in 3rd grade. As our students prepare for their B’nai Mitzvah, depending on the number of students we may offer a B’nai Mitzvah class.

KINDER PRE-K/KINDEREGARTEN
& ALEPH/BET 1st/2nd GRADE
GIMEL/DALET 3rd/4th GRADE & HAY/VAV 5th/6th GRADE
As our students enter the latter grades of their Jewish Education, they transition from the Aleph/Bet to reading in Hebrew including conversational Hebrew. This improves their understanding of the language and allows them to prepare for travel to Israel. Research confirms that the younger the student the easier it is for a child to learn a second language. Hebrew classes are twice a week, Wednesday and Sunday.
During Sunday School the students are taught the Saturday Morning Shabbat Service as a group prior to preparing for their B’nai Mitzvah.
The student’s on Sunday for Religious Education is guided to an understanding and connection to Judaism and Israel. Their lessons are on Jewish life cycle events and holidays which complement the lessons of their Hebrew and Religious studies.
BAR/BAT MITZVAH TRAINING & CLASS
Bar or Bat Mitzvah student meets with Rabbi Sendrow for weekly tutorials for approximately one year. This school year we are offering in a group setting a B’nai Mitzvah class that is part of our Sunday School classes. They learn to read and chant their maftir and haftarah portions, along with the associated blessings.
They also write a short talk—a d’var Torah—with the Rabbi’s assistance. Many students go beyond this standard and lead the Torah service or read extra Torah portions. Shaarey Tefilla is very proud of our B’nai Mitzvah students!
POST-B’NAI MITZVAH (PBM) & PBM CONFIRMATION
The students will be engaging with our rabbi in discussion and debate on a variety of Jewish issues with the rabbi and on occasion guest presenters.
The students will be learning a curriculum based on the Mussar which is the study of Jewish ethics. In addition to the group study of the sourcebooks, each person in the group chooses personally meaningful projects. The goal is for each participant to experience personal growth in numbers one and two, and participate in tikkun olam, repairing the work in number three.
Students will be having a confirmation ceremony after completing Post B’nai Mitzvah classes.
